What is the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) switch off? How will it affect me and my business? This is a topic we get asked all the time here at CCUK so here’s everything you need to know.
ISDN or VoiP?
ISDN is the circuit-switched telephone network that transmits voice, data, video and other network services via the copper-based circuits of the public Switched Telephone Network (PTSN). VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) solutions are fast outgrowing outdated telecom solutions as they are more cost effective and more convenient. PSTN/ISDN equipment is becoming too expensive to maintain and the VoIP market means employees can work remotely and both inbound and outbound telecom communications can be tracked and monitored, increasing transparency in the business place.
The slow transition has been happening since 2020 and will continue over the next few years.
What is the big ISDN switch off?
This is the question you need to ask yourself: Do you have a standard analogue phone line or ISDN connection?
In short, BT are retiring their analogue lines in the UK. This will happen by 2025! This means your standard phone line at home will no longer work and your ADSL (Broadband) connection in the office will no longer work! The switch off will impact both business and home phones alike. The impact is huge and is the biggest change in our UK Telecoms history.
To replace your current systems you will need handsets that can use internet protocol (IP) technology to transmit voice in a digital format using a broadband connection when you make or receive a phone call.
Don’t forget that this also includes:
- Standard Phone Lines
- Home Alarm lines
- Emergency lift phones
Why is this switch off happening?
A lot has happened since the 1980s, and today neither ISDN or PSTN technologies are capable of handling and delivering the volume or quality of data required in today’s increasingly digital and hyper-connected world. A change needs to happen to keep up with the ever-increasing demand for telecom communications.
